Not being able to drive complicates your life. You have to depend on others or use public transportation that is often time-consuming and inconvenient. Getting your driver's license doesn't have to seem like a daunting prospect. You can take adult driving lessons so you can qualify for the driving test and get your license to drive. Here are some things to know.

Classroom Instruction Prepares You For The Exam

The driving exam consists of two parts. One is a driving skills test and the other is a written test. You can study for the written test by obtaining a booklet from the DMV, but you may also want to take classes from a driving school to make sure you learn the things that will be on the test so you can pass the first time. You'll need to learn basic traffic laws and traffic signs. Classroom study allows you to take practice exams too, so you can gain confidence in taking the official test. You may not even need to attend the classes in person. Some driving schools have online instruction so you can take the classes at your convenience to prepare yourself for the exam and driving lessons.

In-Car Learning Teaches You Skills

To actually learn how to drive, you'll need to take lessons in a car. The car is usually provided by the driving school, so you may not even need to own a car yet to take the lessons. You'll start out slow so you don't exceed your skills. You may practice in a large parking lot first so you can gain experience behind the wheel. You'll take on more challenging driving as you gain confidence and experience. The number of your lessons is tailored to your driving ability. You may have experience driving already, and if so, you may not need as much one-on-one skills training. The goal of the driving lessons is to make sure you're safe on the road and to prepare you for the driving portion of the license examination. You'll need to learn specific skills such as turning properly and parking. Once you've mastered basic driving skills, you should pass the test the first time you take it.

Taking the driving test may seem scary now, but once you've been through the lessons with an instructor at your side, you'll feel much more confident. The instructor may even accompany you to the test, although the test will be administered by a DMV official. If you've never driven before, getting your license may seem like an overwhelming prospect, but just keep in mind how much better your life will be once you have your driver's license and you have the freedom to go where you want when you want to.
